KEEPING YOUR NEW SMILE AT ITS BEST WITH RETAINERS

Keeping and maintaining your straight, healthy new smile for a lifetime.

We always make removable retainers for our patients at no extra charge the same day braces are removed. Braces are only the beginning of a great smile and bite. A retainer must be worn faithfully to maintain the position of the teeth after orthodontic treatment is complete. To make sure your teeth don’t go back to their pre-treatment places, we encourage you to wear your retainer as prescribed. If your retainer is misplaced or broken, call the office immediately. After spending all the time and money to fix your teeth, it’s in your best interest to wear your retainer.

Types Of Retainers

Fixed Retainer

One of the best ways to prevent your teeth from shifting is by having a wire retainer permanently attached. We offer a fixed retainer at no extra cost to all our patients. A lower wire retainer will be glued directly to the inside of your lower front six teeth. We will teach you how to clean and floss around your bonded retainer. It is placed before your braces are removed and we encourage you to keep it in place for your lifetime to prevent shifting in this area. If your retainer becomes loose or comes off please call us to schedule a repair or replacement.

Removable Retainer

Removable retainers are delivered at no extra cost the same day braces are removed. They are clear plastic retainers that fit snugly over the entire arch of teeth, both upper and lower. A clear retainer is lightweight, somewhat flexible and very comfortable. The retainer is made using state of the art 3D scanning and printing technology. It works well to keep teeth in position and also offers some protection for those that grind their teeth while sleeping. We encourage all our patients to wear a retainer at nighttime for a lifetime to prevent shifting. In addition to retainers, you will be given models of your teeth, so a replacement retainer is easy and cost-effective to make when necessary.

Retainers may be removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new, correct positions after your teeth have been straightened. Your orthodontist will instruct you on how to care for your retainer and about the duration of the wear. Wearing your retainer as directed is crucial to prevent regression of your treatment.

How Retainers Are Worn

  • Your teeth are guaranteed to shift over time if your retainer is not worn. Just like the rest of our bodies, our teeth and the gums that surround them are constantly changing. They get worn, shift, and age even if they are straightened. The good news is that wearing well-fitting retainers can help to defy mother nature and keep your teeth looking great.

  • Right after your braces are removed, you will need to wear your retainer full time, until Dr. Jones instructs otherwise. They will be removed to eat, drink anything other than water, brush and floss. Usually, we switch our patients to night-time only after a month.

  • Retainers should be worn at nighttime for your lifetime; if they are, you can keep your teeth straight and beautiful always!

  • Initially, you may find it difficult to enunciate clearly. Practice speaking, reading, or singing aloud to get used to them faster.

  • Take your retainer out when eating and always put retainers in their case. Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or at restaurants when they are left on a tray, wrapped in a napkin, and thrown away. Always remember, in your case or in your face!

How To Care For Retainers

  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and pets (they love to chew on retainers!)

  • Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush. Use warm water, liquid hand soap and brush gently. Brushing retainers removes the plaque and eliminates odors.

  • If tartar or stain starts to build up on the retainers, you can order Retainer Brite online from amazon.com or dentakit.com.

  • Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken call us immediately to prevent shifting of your teeth.

  • If you notice that your permanent wire retainer has become loose from one of your lower front teeth, call us so that it can be repaired. If it is left loose, your teeth will shift.

  • Always bring your retainers to every appointment with us or your dentist. If a new filling or crown is completed at the dentist your retainers may not fit and need to be remade as soon as possible to prevent shifting.

Was a great experience. As a much older recipient of orthodontics I can say it went amazingly. All staff members were very courteous at every visit and every phone call. Was an almost 2 year process and worth every day of it.

Dr. Jones and crew are amazing! It’s incredible to have an orthodontist office that creates a fun environment and feel like you’re being treated by family and friends. Everyone is so nice, accommodating, and gentle. I’ve recommended Dr. Jones to several other families who have all had the same experience.
