MONROE, WASHINGTON’S TOP CHOICE FOR CERAMIC AND METAL BRACES

Patients of all ages may choose braces to help them achieve straight, beautiful smiles. We offer both traditional metal and clear ceramic options.

There are various ways to straighten teeth today, helping us find the right treatment for your needs.

The most common ways to straighten teeth are:

Metal Braces — Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel, and thanks to advances in technology and materials, they are now smaller, more comfortable and more attractive than ever before.

Braces

Ceramic (Clear) Braces — Ceramic braces are made of a translucent material that is virtually clear. Ceramic braces are used on the upper front teeth to make them less noticeable. They are popular among our patients, especially adults interested in maintaining a more natural-looking aesthetic during treatment.

Parts Of Braces

Braces

Braces are made up of many parts, such as:

Many of the brackets on the back teeth have small hooks on them. These hooks are used to allow elastics (rubber bands) to be held securely in place.

Elastics (sometimes called orthodontic rubber bands) are used for correcting bite relations. The archwires align the individual teeth, but the elastics correct the bite and improve the fit of the teeth. Elastics correct overbites, underbites, open bites, and many other bite problems.

Elastic chains are used to close spaces, or hold teeth together, to prevent space from opening while teeth are being moved.

Small, flexible coil springs are sometimes placed on the archwires between brackets to help create more space for aligning crowded teeth.

Molar bands are sometimes placed on back teeth. These bands are like rings that fit around the teeth and are secured in place with orthodontic cement. These bands are used for a variety of applications, including attaching elastics, holding headgear in place, attaching appliances, such as holding arches or expanders, or securely attaching brackets to teeth with metal restorations. These bands are easily removed when they are no longer needed.

Brackets are metal or ceramic pieces that are bonded directly to the teeth. The bonding process is painless and straightforward, and the brackets are easily removed after the teeth have been aligned. The metal brackets have a small slot in the middle so that archwires can be placed, and specially designed corners so that ligatures and elastics can be attached to help in the tooth aligning process.

The metal wires used during treatment are what actually straighten the teeth. The wires are changed or adjusted at regular intervals during treatment. Initially, a small, flexible wire is placed and gradually, as the teeth align, larger wires are used to fine-tune the tooth positions.

Sometimes elastic rings are placed over the braces. Traditionally, these were used to hold the wires in place inside the brackets, but now they are used to add some color to your braces for fun.

Small, flexible steel wires are sometimes tied around the brackets to hold the archwires in place.

New, high-tech bracket manufacturing has led to “self-ligating brackets.” Instead of using elastic or steel ligatures to hold the archwire in place, the brackets have doors that the orthodontist can slide open and closed to allow the archwires to be changed or adjusted. Self-ligating brackets can allow for simpler, cleaner adjustments.

How Braces Work

Braces work by placing light forces on the teeth over a period of time. The forces on the teeth create a response which causes a remodeling of the areas around the teeth. Modern orthodontic treatment is safe and predictable. In addition to braces, most patients need to wear rubber bands to correct their bite.

Five-Star rating absolutely for Dr. Jones and his team! Thought it was too late to do anything for my middle-age teeth. I was told about the Invisalign treatment and followed through. The results have been terrific! I’m very pleased and now have a smile I’m not reluctant to show. Thanks again to everyone at the clinic!
