What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners have gained popularity for being a more visually attractive alternative for braces. As you could probably guess from the name, they are made of an almost invisible clear plastic. They are also completely removable, which is great for eating, brushing and flossing. While there are many cases where clear aligners are fantastic alternatives to the usual braces, they do not apply to all situations, and there are some cases where braces will perform better.
When Are They Not the Right Solution?
One of the most frequent situations, when clear aligners aren’t the solution is when there is a case of impacted teeth or severe crowding. The plastic aligners don’t have sufficient grip to draw out misplaced teeth in severe cases, leaving patients sometimes needing supplemental braces to assist the aligners in doing so. This is fairly different than using braces, as the wires in the braces place tension on the brackets. This makes braces highly effective when it comes to pulling your teeth into their correct position.
If you are forgetful or have a habit of losing things, braces are a better option for you as well. You don’t have to worry about losing your braces since they will be constantly bonded to your teeth during the entirety of the treatment. As mentioned above, clear aligners are removable, which has its benefits, but you still need to wear them for 22 hours a day for them to be effective. If you forget to put them back in or end up losing them, it can set your treatment back and cost you more money.
Additionally, some patients would not be good candidates for aligners because of they way their bite fits. In these cases, traditional braces may be the better option.
Why Choose Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners have become a popular choice for orthodontic treatment due to their convenience and aesthetic appeal. Their transparent design makes them almost invisible, allowing you to undergo treatment discreetly. Additionally, their removability means you can enjoy your favorite foods and maintain your usual dental hygiene routine without any significant adjustments.
Treatment Duration and Expectations
While clear aligners offer flexibility, they require consistent wear—typically at least 22 hours per day—to achieve optimal results. Missing wear time can prolong your treatment or compromise the outcome. For patients who are disciplined and committed to following their orthodontist’s instructions, clear aligners can effectively correct a wide range of alignment issues within the expected timeframe.
Not Just for Adults
Clear aligners are often associated with adult orthodontics, but they are also an excellent option for teens. Many aligner systems now come with features like compliance indicators, which help ensure teens wear their aligners as directed. This makes clear aligners a viable and effective option for younger patients who value aesthetics and comfort during treatment.
Cases Requiring Traditional Braces
While clear aligners are versatile, they may not be the best solution for all orthodontic needs. Complex issues, such as significant bite correction, impacted teeth, or extreme crowding, often require the precision and strength of traditional braces. These cases benefit from the constant, targeted pressure that braces provide, making them the preferred choice for achieving optimal results in more challenging situations.
